Evaluations
Evaluating Deans, Chairs, and Directors
The WMU-AAUP conducts evaluations of deans, associate deans, assistant deans, chairs, and directors during the spring semester in the final year of their respective current appointment. The evaluation is conducted using an electronic survey of faculty within the college (for deans) or unit (for chairs/directors). If the faculty of the college/unit want to evaluate deans/chairs/directors prior to the final year of their appointment, they may elect to do so as described below.
Requesting an evaluation
Evaluations will be conducted automatically as described above, though faculty may request an evaluation be performed out of the normal schedule.
If a unit’s Departmental Policy Statement calls for an annual evaluation of the chair or director, a written notice from the Association Council representative will initiate an evaluation. If a unit has a personnel committee responsible for bringing forth requests for evaluations, a written request from the chair of the personnel committee will initiate an evaluation.
If the faculty request an evaluation of a chair or director outside the regular schedule, a written notice stating that a majority of the unit’s voting faculty have voted in favor of evaluating the chair/director must be received from the unit’s Association Council representative.
If the faculty request the evaluation of a dean outside the regular schedule, a written notice stating that a majority of the voting Association Council representatives have voted in favor of the evaluation of the dean must be received from the Executive Committee member representing the College that is requesting the evaluation. Deans at all levels (dean, associate deans and assistant deans) may be included in the evaluation if requested by the Executive Committee member.

The summary of numerical data and comments collected from the evaluation of the chairs and directors will be sent to the respective chair or director for whom it was collected. Only the summary of the numerical data will be made available to faculty (through Association Council representatives) and sent to the deans and the provost.
